If an animal you love
sits on the other side
of a locked metal gate,
you can slide
your back against the gate,
and sit quiet.
And the dog who loves you
on the other side
will push his body along yours,
and you both will stay that way,
getting as close as you can
for as long as you can.
And isn’t that
all love really is.
