What Carries Us Through

How can I dream a party
in the great garden
when human violence
is on our giant screen?
Yet I dream we are present,
joyful multitudes in a garden
streaming with sunlight.

In time of discord and danger
and everywhere breakdown,
dreaming becomes
indispensable.
I seek the scenes that show us
singing together
in resistance and love.

How can I take pleasure
in beauty or play
while my taxes pay for murder
across the street, across the world.
In order to balance the fear,
I must delight in life and
stare steady at the bareness.

We walk the tightrope
holding the pole, the poise.
In turbulence our skills
perforce grow swiftly. Sustaining
extreme emotions,
we listen newly to dreams
and our love carries us through
