Tomasa’s Madonna
Most who painted or sculpted her
bent her wrists a little,
but Tomasa made the clay
lift the Madonna’s hands
in an ovation of acclaim.
When those angels
set a crown of flowers on her brow,
Mary was rapturous all right.
The scent of roses
always sent her straight to jubilation.
Maybe you thought she was praying.
but Our Lady’s hands
were captured by Tomasa
in the act of ecstatic clapping.
