Thank the Stars

Now I know it was dangerous.
Then, I knew it safe –
scooting steeply backwards
from a porch on the second story,
I scaled the asphalt shingles on my butt.
Up I boosted, to the flat cranny
where the red brick chimney rose at my back.
I left the chaos behind.
The vault of the sky
poured me the space I craved.
The world still spreads before my eyes,
even wider than
when I was a child.
I lean again, against my sturdy life,
and raise my eyes to stars I started from.
I nod, and they remember me.
I fit my largeness to a constellation shape,
and thank the stars for Pegasus wings.
Tonight I perch at the height of my life,
easy, and ready to fly.
