Telling the Long Story
at the Sterkfontein Caves, South Africa
We witness the past
coming alive beneath our feet.
Underground Dolomite chambers
span three million years of change
to tell the long story.
Fossils still embedded in rock
startle us with hominid bones.
We walk, and sometimes crawl,
in the footsteps of early ancestors.
The dark wet labyrinth,
like an earthen womb,
continues today,
an active dig site revealing
who we were.
