Sonorous One

I don’t know clouds,
I never heard of falling,
I don’t yet know what words mean.
I am only ears.
Newborn I,
hear your sound and wonder.
I think you must
be very large a being
to have a voice that purrs so.
A blanket voice that comforts me,
one that makes me trust,
a voice as steady as a mother.
But a swishy clatter voice
that also rouses me!

You who visit me tonight,
do you have a name?
Are you acreature from the sea
come to my street as I sleep?
Come to say a long hello
in canto poem that sheets and teems?
Though I’m inside it seems
I lie beneath
your sound outside the window.
You ring as if you are a royal being,
grand and sovereign,
holy, soft.
Through the cells of all my skin
I open wide my listening.

Are you singing me to dreams?
Are you dreaming me a song?
Are you telling me a tale?
You must be very strong
to carry on and on and on
in a pace so imperturbable
and at such a volume!
I listen hard, with eyes all wide.
I do not comprehend
but only feel
your syllables of wondrous music
that do not stop, do not stop.
I nestle in your sound quilt
and pull you to my chin.

Oh, I hear you change!
Unhurried now, you slow your voice,
and make me wonder more.
Your tone holds something new.
Your pitch and pound
holds bubbles,
burbles in your voice .
Are you a child-being like me?
You’re adding to the language of your story.
But I think the story’s winding,
winding down, your voice
so gently softening.
How tenderly you sound
your queenly power now.

I feel you stream contentment.
I feel your dozy voice approach
a sighing satisfaction.
I your wondering listener smile,
full of drowsy clapping gratitude.
Shall we sleep now, Mystery mine?
Goodnight goodnight
you sonorous, sliding being.
I carry you to dreaming.
Oh friend I cannot see,
dream sweet yourself! Dream sweet.
Dear secret singing in the night,
I hear you whisper in my ear:
My name, my name is Rain.

This is one of my favorites!! Love how you describe the experience before naming! When I reread it with the knowledge of what you describe I appreciate even more the sumptuous wordsmithing you present to us. 🥰
