Sitting with my Neighbors

photography by Susa SilvermarieI’m an introvert,
I don’t speak their language well enough,
the gathering is past my bedtime.
So when they invite me
with their gracious warmth,
I am honored, and I am afraid.
Of what?

Not of ICE agents tackling me.
Only afraid of discomfort,
an unease arising
from my own unquiet heart.
Awkwardness, not a fault,
unless I let it stop
me from accepting invitations.

Let me sit with my twitching.
I turn to my Greater Consciousness for help
to let embarrassment be what it is.
A perturbation I can smile at,
A discomposure I allow.
I ask to be an introvert who chooses
to move through fear toward love.
