Sips of Morning

A drop of coffee on my tongue,
I consider the coffee farm,
rows following the contour
of the Chiapas mountain,
shade trees in the coffee rows.
Each sip sings the praises
of particular coffee plants.
Thank you, thank you
for your strong taproots,
for your singular taste.

Oh Green Beings with red fruit,
your seeds roasted for me, for me,
into perfect sips of morning.
I raise my blue Purepecha cup
made by Tomasa’s hands,
inviting into this day
my wildest, furthest-range
imagination,
and this day choosing to expect
nothing, nothing but  blessings.
