Oh Death, Hello

photography by Susa Silvermarie

Oh Death, hello,
you approach at Samhain,
here called Day of the Dead,
carrying ancestors closeby.
But it’s you I invite to my side,
dear Death, to breathe your presence
into this day I am alive.

When you walk with me
every hour becomes precious.
When you whisper in my ear,
nothing passes unappreciated.
Please, I need you near.
Each day brings me
to the brink of your portal,
making the joy of this side
shine!

Death let me learn
how you honey my life,
how you burn away
distraction from what matters.
Be my passionate companion,
Death. Soon
I will know you again.
Soon I will take your hand to cross.
Stay close, stay close.

  • This may be one of the best poems about death ever. A lot of wisdom here and I love the idea of inviting the awareness of mortality to “stay close” so that I can “make the joy of this side shine.”

  • Reminds me of how Antiga used to ask for us to sing the old Appalachian song, “O Death,” many times for months and months of her lessons. I think it was a way to become more and more comfortable with death, although the singer in the song says, “won’t you spare me over for another year?”
