It Shouldn’t Take Much

I was sitting still watching it
from the porch but then
suddenly I was the rain.
I poured down with the rain.
The falling felt like
a rush of welcome surrender.
I wasn’t a drop, I was the driving,
flying into earth.
Since all we are
is atoms, anyway,
it shouldn’t take much
to switch our shapes.
A teensy twist
of an inner kaleidoscope
to shift the pieces
into a different picture,
An instant lifting
of methylation marks
inside my embryonic state –
and presto, the genes get freed,
no more frozen identity.
Pluripotency!
So I can tune and turn
into anything at all.
Let me try it with the towhee
plain and pecking at my seed dish.
If I am still enough, if
my attention can zoom right in…
Even though the sun is back,
these seeds are damp and
I do so like them crisp. Still,
I’m glad the human remembered.

Wow! This poem coincided with what I’ve just been hearing about in the Jordan Bates podcast where he interviews Bob Frissel about his book NOTHING IN THIS BOOK IS TRUE.
Insightful poem. Love it.
