Insurgent Love
From the country where I live now,
the country I came from
doesn’t look so central.
Distance diminishes the sense
of its supremacy.
I have more loved ones
in the country I came from,
but my anguish and compassion
over government attacks, fascism on the streets
in the country of my birth
feels as heartbreaking as what I feel
about the suffering in Gaza, Venzuela,
Iran or Ukraine. Our species’
family has members everywhere.
Wherever we rise,
we contribute energies, and stretch
to defend and lift our siblings.
In whatever neighborhood,
we offer our needed piece
to the living mosaic of insurgent love.
