In my Breakfast Bowl

I thank the banana tree
the very one that gave me this banana,
firm and sliced into my bowl.
And dear specific mango tree,
thank you, oh  thank you
for the juicy fruit you gave me today.
I thank you apple tree, the one that grew
to produce these crispy cut-up pieces
of the apple made for me.
And to each bush of blueberries
that these luscious berries sprang from,
it’s thanks I offer for your creation.

I rise from the breakfast table now
married in my flesh, carrying
true connection with each of these
distinct Green Beings, particular trees,
and each of the bushes that gave me berries.
I bear their cells and nourishment.
And how could they not, these benefactor beings,
track their fruits out into the world.
I think they know me now
as recipient awake and grateful.
We link with everything we eat
in the endless mutual round of earth
