Garden Counsel

The Green Beings have been patient.
Now they ask my full attention
so they can counsel me.
In many voices, one song.

Elephant leaves in the garden jungle
wave in the wind
They gaze their large hearts my way.
Their tenor hum is tender.
Plum-laden Ciruela branches
dripping red jewels
counsel rest.
Deep rest.

Against the north wall,
Roelia flowers sing
their purple notes
of steadfast happiness.
Cempazuchitl, an annual,
keeps on reseeding,
and murmurs in the tones
of golden Gone-Befores.

The Duranta shrub
like the climax of a jazz musical
is belting out
some big trumpet number.
The garden Teachers
have me where they want me.
I’m seated like a good student
at my outdoor desk.

In distinct green voices,
part of one song,
the dear Green Beings
offer quiet counsel.
