For All My Cousins
Fetched from far time,
it’s the startling truth:
Every living being’s my cousin.
What? The toad, the mayfly too?
The trick of evolution has unfolded
for what seems to be forever,
and at the start of the magic,
we surely weren’t ourselves.
So yes, it’s a stretch to remember
all beings as our relations.
But more crucial is the new trick,
to keep evolving that which is unseen:
our gene-less consciousness.
To sustain our species and our relatives,
we change our energy,
expand perception, grow covert antennae.
Hiding beneath the news,
pressing out from every dream,
the new human knows
we only have a mayfly day
to turn the world on a dime,
to metamorphose
from sapien to homo luminous.*
We become the cousins
who take our small and caring place;
and with the clan entire, thrive.
