Eve’s Fruit

Under the mango tree,

Eve picked up a fruit

that had just thumped down on the ground.

Blushing red-orange

over its pale yellow shape,

the rich gift called her name

and offered itself.

She sensed its wisdom

and answered her own yearning

to take it into her body.

Eve received communion,

sucking its sweetness,

letting its sticky juices

run freely from her lips and fingers.

What you put in your mouth

has a story, Eve knew.

She listened with her teeth,

with her swallowing throat,

with her belly.

What you put in your body

connects you with its story.

Eve received the mango’s tale:

sacred pollination,

seed pushing up from earth,

seeking sun, holding carbon,

breathing out what we breathe in;

long growing and patient waiting.

Eve knew that her body was built

for nourishment from the foods

by which she was surrounded.

First Mother Eve, first locavore.

The mango she held in her sticky hands

brought her sensual pleasure

and boosted her immunities.

The fruit in our First Mother’s hands

made her truly unified

with her neighbor, the mango tree.

And in the fruit, Eve perceived

loving support for her existence

from the universe entire.
