Entering the Stream

We stick our toes in— and yank them back.
Fearsome, the current of consciousness.

Those of us not foolish enough,
those who remain on the riverbank,

shall be left behind by the rush of imaginal cells
streaming humans toward the change

that is now at hand, the time
to unseal our shuttered eyes.

Come, let’s push fiercely
into the roiling middle of the river,

Let’s cling as one being in the swirling river
as the fast waters toss us about,

and the banks grow far away.
Let’s lose our little selves in luminous belonging.

There is nothing now but trust
in the flow that knows its destination,

nothing now but surrender to our larger selves.
Nothing now but waking. Waking!

I can’t help thinking about Hurricane Helene and the devastating loss as people and places were swept down the French Broad River into Lake Lure NC.
