Day of the Dead in Mexico

A commemoration, yes,
and moreso, a journey.
We amble in the dark on the Day of the Dead
to connect the worlds by attending
to our ancestors, celebrating
their lives with ofrendas and joy and music
and with our loving presence;
our togetherness a gesture of respect,
the skeletons an honoring of death
as a natural part of life.
This is heritage and family,
not pretend and spooky;
spiritual joy, not thrills and candy.
The Day of the Dead in Mexico
has no need for foreign customs.
When cemeteries are filled with laughter
there is no trick,
only the truth of death.
And the treat is food and grieving
shared in deep remembrance.
