And the World Got Larger
When I put my elbows on the table
rested my head on my hands
and stared at my coffee in the restaurant,
when Marisol came from behind the counter
to ask if I was okay,
when I told her my Mom had died;
when she silently set a vigil candle
in front of me, and lit it –
the world got larger and kinder.
When my neighbor Kelly found a way
into the vacant house across the street
and rescued the dog
who’d been whimpering for weeks –
the universe sang hallelujah
and the world got larger and kinder.
When Milagros in the grocery store
asked me what was the matter,
and I told her the carpenter down the street
who had my large deposit for months
still hadn’t started the desk I designed,
she said she knew a better place.
When she took off her apron
and walked me back to the carpenter
to receive my deposit back –
the wind blew hidden kisses
out to every being everywhere.
And the world got larger and kinder.
When Ceci came to my door
with a handmade gift soap for Christmas
and said Yo quiero mucho, Vecina,
I blinked in shock and then shed tears,
and the morning blossomed love
all out to farthest stars. And the world.
oh the world got larger and kinder.

Your posts have been hitting home with me the past few days. I realized that the writing is dated 2025 and that helps me because I don’t have a lot of “new work.” I berate myself for that. Yet I did a short reading a couple of weeks ago at a friend’s birthday— of older but not often read poems—and it made me so happy. I said to my worried inner inner artist; don’t worry, honey, you’ve still got it!”
This one brought tears to my eyes.
I got chills reading this. Powerful. Powerful.
Beautiful picture!
