Alphabet Alveoli

All the hours of your life,
birth to the final breath,
carbon- rich air
departs from your lungs,
every breath
furnishing just what the plants want. The
gas exchange taking place in your alveoli
has given back to the atmosphere,
in every place you have ever breathed,
just what you must expell,
kindly making room in your
lungs, in each tiny
miracle sac, making space,
no cognition on your part, for
oxygen-rich air to enter,
providing your blood with life,
quietly loving your body.
Racing along, now how many years,
such a sweet process of swapping.
The action won’t stop
until you do. Oh alveoli magic,
vital site of interchange,
we cheer your trading trick, your
xlnt exacting work on our behalf,
your yes, your yield, your
zealous zing that keeps us living.
