A Poem is Meant

Sculpture in Bassano del Grappa of Giovanni Vaccari,Poeta 1862-1919
What would be the use,
without you?
The poem would float
free of hearing to a land
that needs no ears.
Without receiving,
would it still be music?
Such a lonely poem,
only I will have heard it.
A bit of universe, caught gently,
ought to be returned
by way of someone else.
Now do you see
how crucial you are?
The words would lie still
in their peculiar order, it’s true.
But a poem is meant to be
a bridge, a link, a conduit.
I need you on the other end
for the poem to be alive,
for the poem to be of use.
