Unnameable Wildflower
I want to be wild as weeds in spring
leaping profuse, fountaining green
in field after field.
I want to be an unnameable wildflower
mingling with a hundred sisters.
I want to be native and I want to be from foreign parts
bursting verdant from the earth.
I want to trust life like a weed does,
I want to lean on my neighbors like a weed.
For my fleeting hour under the sun
I want to drink the light with gracious gratitude.
Soon, so soon dead,
I want to exult
like a stunning, common weed.
For David on your birthday, from a mother who remembers with bursting verdant love, your stunning childhood
