Toloache

photography by Susa Silvermarie Te dieron toloache is a Mexican expression for being love-struck or being otherwise altered in consciousness

Through the mint-green fairy gate
that separates our yards,
I watch the Brugmansia tree
here called toloache,
dangle its pendulous trumpets
in pumpkin-colored elegance.

The breeze is blowing this way.
By the gate, I breathe deep and ask
that my vision be opened.
I wish to be,
as the botanists describe these blossoms,
deliriant.

I pray also that my poetry blooms
might bring a reader to her senses,
might cause a reader to deviate
‘til standard perception pales.
Until old ways of being
dizzily giddily, laughingly fail.

Perhaps tonight I’ll open the gate.

  • I love this. It gave me a chill up my back to read it. I love the word “deliriant.” !!!!!!! It also made me think of your poem about the mango tree and I still see that huge bowl of mangoes on your table. Here we scrape just to buy ripe mango at the market. Your poems bring me to my senses for sure. May I always deviate, and open the gate!
