On the Queen’s Day in Mexico
The music draws me toward the sound
on the Queen’s day in Mexico,
and then because my feet
have happily answered the call,
I see the jovial band
is walking straight my way.
I join the Procession
behind the marching band
behind the handsome dancing horses
behind the bearer of the banner to Our Lady.
In early morning brightness,
I follow the brassy music.
At the shore the riders dismount
and place the banner to Guadalupe
beneath the shade of an ancient tree.
Close to the bank of the shining lake,
the musicians take their places
and singers rise to voice their love.
Exuberance gets magnified by beverages
lifted to the Lady!
The tuba player
begins to dance his instrument,
whirling his silver horn
round and round in the sun.
The dawning of the Queen’s day
honors the Great Mother of all.
A morning of play and prayer
in a culture whose fathers and sons
delight in the female Divine!
Hope for what the world can be.
