Masked Meaning

Not a disguise,
though disguise it does.
Not to amuse, not anymore.
To terrify? Now the terror
is to go without one.
With our masks today,
we aim only to protect.
But more than airborne molecules
are obstructed. Smiling mouths
hide beneath the cloth.

Yet no mask can cover
kindness in the eyes.
Now we learn to seek
crinkles at the edges of the eyes.
Now we seek to learn
how to decipher the shine
that only comes from wishing well,
one masked human to another.
