Let Me Have Both
The ekphrastic (poem prompted by visual art) exercise was to choose a painting to write from.
Let me climb the stairs
to the beacon, the shining guide —
I long for aloneness!
Yet the Autumn birches
are calling me
to something so communal.
The forest is only alive
together.
I refuse to choose,
I claim them both.
I shall walk into the fiery family
because they love me.
And from the lighthouse,
I will gaze,
because I love to view
the world through my only eyes.
