Further Back
Did my European ancestors
colonize your Indigenous ancestors?
Without a doubt they did.
And are our ancestors,
going back and back
and further back,
ancestors in common?
Without a doubt they are.
From the distant past
where bloodlines merge,
ancient mothers
watch us all;
and command us to remember:
We are
a single
human family.
From back and back
and further back in time,
every one of us is kin.
Let us take to heart the mothers’ charge,
so on and on
and further on in time,
our absurd illusion of separation
will scarcely be believed.
