Flowering
What moment did trust
send forth a shoot?
I don’t know the hour, the day
the seed pushed out to germinate.
And how, oh how
does the flower unfurl?
I set a chair in the garden
to try to perceive the unseeable
spreading of new love’s petals.
I open my eyes as wide as I can
to discern the secret movement
while it’s happening.
I slow and slow,
and slow my motion,
determined and enthralled
to watch the blossom stretch.
Though I sit as still as I can,
the flowering of love
keeps its secret even so.
I offer the blooming,
the mysterious unfolding,
the unexpected trust
which even in this now of dissolution
turns its face to the sun–
to the worried world as hope.
