Everything is With Me

I cross the fast-flowing Chamba–
wake-up cold!–
and I don’t slip.
On the other side
two rocks make me a step,
and long grasses give me a hand.
to roll myself up
onto the steep bank.
I never was
alone, as I had thought.
Everything was always
with me,
for me,
on my side.

Something told me
where to cross.
The river song,
the sound of wind in the woods,
the frequency of me—
speaking the same tongue.
Individual leaves,
and whole branches,
wave to me in cheery recognition.
I never
was alone. Everything
is with me.
