And the River Laughs

We name the river parts
and the river laughs.
We say the river flows in stages,
(it helps our box-like minds)
and the river simply continues.
We name the source, the mouth,
the confluences. We savor
the many separate river names
(each a lovely chance for praise!),
but a river doesn’t fit in boxes.
It laughs and bends its way along.
Unbothered. Holy. Whole.
