Sea Change

From below,
coming my way
the whale shark’s face,
wider than I am long.
Coming my way,
a looming change,
a silent
swallowing of the past.

A looming change, already
the planet’s present moment.
An ocean of room now
inside the mind closet.
The planet’s present, the gift
of an endangered species
moving toward me.
Unstoppable.

Her giant spectral presence,
endangered, peaceful,
urgent,
turns me inward.
Peaceful, urgent,
the pandemic opens its mouth
gentle as a whale shark
to slow us, to sift our species.
