Art Camp by Diana Shipes

His name is Jorge and he just turned six. I purchased his watercolor at the Lake Chapala Society sale after the Children’s Art Program (CAP) annual Art Camp. As a volunteer at the regular Saturday CAP sessions, I’ve been watching this young artist for awhile. He comes with his beautiful Grandmother, who gives him stalwart one hundred percent support, and he immediately gets to work. I first noticed his unusual concentration, the way he never looks up from his work and always seems to know exactly what he wants to do next in whatever piece he is creating. His whole-hearted focus regularly results in highly imaginative scenes that seem to me to be in motion. In this watercolor (now at the frame shop!), he shows us several levels of perspective, the most distant one being a lighthouse appearing to float on another shore beyond the waves… I feel like another grandma myself–I love this sweet boy, can you tell?
