Returning on the Vernal Equinox

It’s always startling after
meditation, to open my eyes.
But this time, this time
there are horses! Two of them,
chasing in the shallows of the lake.

Horses! Did you descend with wings,
now folded and invisible,
before I opened my eyes?
Are you horse gods deigning
a visit to the human shore?

You are free of tether and tender.
Swimming now, big bodies
gone weightless, your heads
burnished jewels set in water,
flanks now vanished.

Pegasus sisters, rich
in thunderbolts of poetry,
perhaps it was your hoofstrike
that once caused
the lake to spring between the mountains.

On this beginning day of spring,
exactly when the rising sun
reaches your graceful equine necks,
you splash to shore
like noisy apparitions.

Tail and mane dripping diamonds,
one of you trots
past me on the path.
But your companion disappears
in the opposite direction.

Oh divinities of Balance,
how your ritual dance
purifies my mind on Equinox!
You paint the day with loveliness
that lasts beyond your leaving.

I rise from meditation
as if rising from my tomb,
marveling at the world anew.
From the death of winter,
horses! You and also I,
return alive.
