Occupy Human, My Holiday Wish

My post  Occupy Self seemed to touch a nerve.  Everything we can possibly occupy, from the original movement on Wall Street to all its permutations, is, of course, already occupying self. But the self is an instance, a single irreplaceable instance of human. How, in a multiverse of beings, can we selves truly Occupy our Human niche?

In the midst of my ruminations, the radio announces, China fears losing former Brit colony Hong Kong. In headlines we often hear the puny version of human, the view that encourages us to keep our selves small. Reversing that, I imagine China going  to a good counselor, being helped to feel the fear, to name it and sit still in it, to perhaps repeat the Twelve Step Serenity Prayer during diplomatic encounters; and then, to open those clenched fists and relinquish what it fears losing.

What I mean is, let’s face our fears and struggles as part of Occupy Human. Let’s grow into a larger sense of our species. Let’s do it one by one until even the heads of countries are selves Occupying Human. Human need no longer be a word to excuse failures. Accepting that our power resides in being completely responsible for our own lives, accepting that we can’t control anything else– that’s the mature human. That’s Occupying Human.  Then the media might reflect something along the lines of China cedes gracefully.

My holiday wish is for us to Occupy our deep, authentic and encompassing Human selves.

We have Not “already” occupied ourselves,
as you say. That is why “Occupy Self” is such a crucial concept. Going to China with this concept is the opposite end of the idea. “Know thyself” is first.
The individual Chinese person must not be a representative of the state, but an expression of the true unique Self. We are very afraid of being our true Selfs. We are hiding in “China” or “Democrat”.
“Human” brings us together, so I see that point.
To say “Occupy Self” means, to me, to live who
we are as individuals. A mourning dove IS itself.
We are so often trying to be something we aren’t.
