Holy Water

photography by Susa SilvermarieWater is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. Whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. What is soft is strong.― Lao Tzu

All this time I have not known
water would change if I
whisper gratitude and love,
or any words to bless its memory clean.
Four fifths water I am,
and the bioplasm of my brain,
even more of the magic molecule,
the one I floated in before my birth,
the substance of earth most common,
the amount of which remains
the same as when the earth was formed.

While scientists stared
at its stable composition,
we didn’t note its structure,
unpredictable and wild.
Water assimilates vibrations
from the earth where it emerges.
Water acquires in its clusters
imprints of its surroundings,
retains like RAM, the memories
of miles of pipes, of poisons,
of chemicals and contaminants
as well as gratitude and love.
Water receives the data that shapes it,
for good or ill, into water words.

When my thoughts turn aggressive
I pollute the water I am,
distorting the shape of the molecules,
creating in my body, that distorted charge.
But water gives us the power
to change its memory to grace.
So I sing to my body of water,
sing each day to every glass I drink.
I imitate its own self-cleansing;
when it vaporizes and condenses,
when it freezes, when it melts,
it shakes off grime,
and returns to beginner’s mind.

Dipping my hand, when I was young,
in the church’s holy water font,
I imprinted prayer on water—
though I didn’t know the holiness
came from my intentions.
The measured frequency of prayers
matches the oscillations
of earth’s magnetic field.
Water also gives the memory
of the place where you were born;
for the structure
of the water in your homeplace
is the same as the structure
of the water in your body.
Marvelous medium of water
transmits information
in a liquid internet.

Holy element that’s everywhere,
may I never again
take you for granted.
May water in my life each day
be blessed and be transformed
by my love and by my gratitude.
May every thought I broadcast
and every word that falls from my lips
be a drop of deepest thanks,
oh water,
for the gleaming miracle of you.
