Entangled

My mother tests positive for Covid today.
Everything, the physicists say,
is made of energy. Seems we knew,
when we used to say, I’ll send you love.
Or when we said, I’ll pray for you.

My mother lives in a nursing home.
and my thoughts are travelers,
an energy that touches hers.
This is finally science now,
joining ranks with poets and mystics.

Ten decades  and two years more,
my mother’s been alive on earth.
It doesn’t matter overmuch,
what they will call the cause
when her time to go arrives.

What matters is, she hasn’t had a visitor
since Covid came six months ago.
She lives in her room, and now
will likely die alone, even if
restrictions in general are lifted.

My mother has eight living children
who cannot say goodbye.
One of them has cared for her
every single day for many years.
To whom does the sadness belong?

My mother was famous for no regrets.
Perhaps she said her goodbyes long ago.
It seems she’s unwinding her spool of life
and the movie is not yet complete.
I refuse to presume her loneliness.

Literature was my mother’s love.
If she still was choosing to speak,
she might well quote Rilke:
Let everything happen to you,
beauty & terror. No feeling is final.

My mother is far from me.
but I am entangled with her,
connected through the quantum field.
And so I send my messages of love today,
transmitting pings of little pleasures.

And so I know, in some way she,
like a satellite dish, receives
her children’s heartfelt sendings,
messages we cannot say in person.
However it continues on, I honor
the path of my mother’s life.
