Adrienne Rich Essential Essays

In 1976 an essay of mine called “The Motherbond” appeared in Women, A Journal of Liberation. Shortly thereafter, my very much younger self was ecstatic to receive a phone call from my feminist writing hero, Adrienne Rich. She asked for permission to publish an excerpt of my essay in her book Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Institution and Experience, an excerpt later quoted in the New York Times Book Review.  And now over four decades later,  I am deeply honored to have the piece quoted in a new collection of Rich’s prose. Having Adrienne Rich’s posthumous collection show up on my Mexican doorstep, thanks to the sleuthing diligence and utmost kindness of her literary executor son Pablo, has reminded me of my feminist roots and heritage. And of what we all owe to the pioneering feminist ancestors who forged the way.
